Cutcliffe III

No comments yet

Thank you for tuning in. This is a super easy fly with an unusual dubbing. My good friend @thetroutconjurer and fellow Cutcliffe fan was able to acquire some fur from Devon cattle. This fur shows up in a few of Cutcliffe's patterns.

Recipe:
Hook - Size 14 long shank wetfly/nymph hook. Kirby shape bend was Cutcliffe's preference. I think any long shank hook will work.
Body - Devon cow fur
Rib - gold twist (wire).
Hackle - Red black rooster hackle. The assumption here is furnace...Roger Wooley a famous tier from Devon in the early 1800s did this pattern with furnace. I chose to use a feather from Kerby Hackle which is a great small grower here in the US. My feather is super shiny (love that) and black near the stem then red then more "sunburst" at the tips.
Silk - primrose yellow

I have other videos on Cutcliffe so search the channel. I have one that goes over his tying "method" and you can then use that concept and tie patterns to suit your waters. Give them a try when bug activity is lively as they work great. @thetroutconjurer swears by them as the top dropper "bobbing" on the surface and he gets ferocious takes on pressured tailwaters in Colorado.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
